This week has flown by! We had the London Marathon, decent weather and council elections. And with these election results, thank God for the good weather.
The far-right is defintely on the rise in the UK and from some of the news I’ve captured this week for you, we can definitely see the devastating effect it is having on its ethnic minority citizens.
But, as usual, I’ve also recapped some of the good news that does go under the radar.
So without further ado, here’s what you shouldn’t have missed this week.
News
Exclusive to The Source - A Black woman who was the only non-white face out of 100 in her first media job decided to launch her own network with now over 1000 Black journalists. Hannah Ajala says she is pledging to help with costs including travel for interviews in a bid to normalise seeing more Black journalists in an industry overrepresented by white people. A 17-year-old boy has been creating essential hygiene kits for the homeless filled with soap, shampoo, toothpaste and heartfelt notes which read “we see you; we care about you.” Rohan Mehta began the initiative aged 15 and received an award for his philanthropic work this year. A roundabout in Reading has been renamed to mark the contributions of the Windrush generation after a “heartfelt” request by a descendant from Barbados. People of the Windrush generation gathered to celebrate the occasion including 92-year-old Dorothy Grace Brown who also arrived from Barbados. Multi-award-winning Rapper Dizzee Rascal says that he retrained as a plasterer after feeling he needed to ‘learn to do stuff’. The 40-year-old shared that he obtained a City and Guilds Certificate in Plastering after attending Able Skills Construction Training in Dartford. Read the full story by Ava Keady at Joe.
Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe took the win on his debut in the London Marathon’s men’s race. The 29-year-old recorded a time of two hours, two minutes and 27 seconds. Watch the report on BBC.

A 16-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake in Nottinghamshire has been named as Valentine Ikechukwu. His family released a statement saying they were ‘absolutely devastated’ and that he was a well-loved son and brother. Read the full story at Nottinghamshire Police News.
A body found in the Thames has sadly been identified as that of 11-year-old Kaliyah Coa who went missing last month. Her heartbroken family released a statement asking for space to grieve while the Metropolitan Police has asked people to refrain ‘from wholly inaccurate speculation.’ Read the full story at Metropolitan Police News.
An inquest into Kaliyah’s death has heard that she died from the effect of cold water after entering the Thames to retrieve a lost shoe. The circumstances will further be examined during the inquest. Read the full story by the BBC.
Policing
The Metropolitan Police officer cleared of murder after shooting dead Chris Kaba will face a gross misconduct hearing after the police watchdog says it ‘determined there was sufficient evidence to indicate he may have breached the police professional standards regarding his use of force.’ Read here.
Crime
A man has been arrested after a woman was allegedly racially abused in an unprovoked attack while walking her dog in a Merseyside park. The woman was subjected to threats and had a large branch thrown at her. Read the full story by Angela Ferguson at BBC.
A man accused of a crossbow attack which left two women seriously injured, voiced racist and misogynistic views on social media. Owen Lawrence, 38, who was suspected of the attack died in the hospital. Read the full story by Lizzie Dearden at The New York Times.
Legal
A 21-year-old man who served three years in prison after wrongfully being identified in a drill music video says he now wants to study law after having his conviction quashed. Ade Adedeji says he also wants to write a book about how the justice system treats children of colour as he says a white person would not have been in the same position. A man has denied murdering 14-year-old boy Daniel Anjorin and attacking four other people with two Japanese swords. Marcus Arduini Monzo, 36, is accused of running up behind Daniel Anjorin who was on his way to school in the morning and killing him. Read the full story by Ellie NG at The Standard.
