Good morning, afternoon or evening,

Thank you for subscribing to The Source.

Coming to you a bit later in the day as I wanted to share my thoughts on the Bhim Kohli case where two teenagers were sentenced after being found guilty of manslaughter. The 15-year-old boy who racially abused and attacked 80-year-old Bhim Kohli was sentenced to seven years in custody, while the girl who encouraged it avoided jail, only receiving a six-month curfew and rehabilitation order. Concluding the case, the judge said he did not find the attack to be racist but that when the slur was used, it was a “very lazy and hurtful insult.”

Bhim Kohli

After reading what happened to Bhim Kohli, I have no doubt that each blow that struck him was supposed to embody how those vile racist words were intended to feel. The use of racist slurs such as P**i or n****r has always gone hand in hand with fear, violence and death for decades, but when the justice system is confronted with these cases, that dangerous evil gets reduced down to “lazy and hurtful.” Instead of considering the clear and basic connection between racism and brutality that people of colour have had to endure, this hateful ideology is treated as though it is separate from the physical harm inflicted on Black and Brown bodies, leaving it exempt from consequence, only deserving of a footnote of acknowledgement, just to be completely disregarded in the end.

As for the teenagers who took a vulnerable man’s life, they’ll have a chance to go on to live theirs. But for those who have to pick up the pieces, the words uttered by the judge are another hurtful insult that puts into perspective how Black and Brown people’s lives are minimised, devalued and ignored even when they are right there lying motionless on the ground. But the laziest part of all is that the deliberate lack of desire to understand and admit the role of racism will continue to uphold racist systems. After going through the grief and anguish of seeking fairness, it’s people of colour who are forced to keep moving forward with broken lives burdened by the heaviest weight of injustice.

Rest in peace Bhim Kohli. You deserved better.
